How to tell if your drain is blocked

A blocked drain cause both stress and can create unwanted costs. There are however several early signs of a blocked drain, which if identified soon enough can prevent further damage to any pipes, drains and general areas.

Signs associated with a blocked drain can include:

Unpleasant odours coming from drain

Blocked drains tend to emit foul/ unpleasant odours. Drains can become blocked due to food debris stuck in the pipes. As the food slowly decomposes it creates a noticeably bad smell, which appears worse if the tap has been turned on.

Slow drainage

If there is a blockage present in the pipe, any water will drain slowly. The water has to filter through or around the blockage creating a sluggish flow.

Raised water levels

The easiest way to detect a toilet blockage is if when flushed your toilet water level rises higher than normal. However if water rises to the point of overflowing, there could be a much more serious issue within your drains.

Gurgling sounds

If any strange gurgling sounds are heard from drains and plug holes, this could be a sign of a blockage. The gurgling sound indicates that there is trapped air in the drain, and is escaping when you run water.
